On October 31st, Page A15 of Macao Daily News published an exclusive interview with Mr. Huang Shuzhan, Chairman of Optical Link Century and Member of the Macao Science and Technology Committee. Focusing on the construction of the Macao Science and Technology R&D Park and the future direction of Macao’s sci-tech industry, the interview explores how to achieve appropriate economic diversification and high-quality development through innovation-driven growth.

As one of the "four major projects" of the Macao SAR Government, the Macao Science and Technology R&D Park aims to build a comprehensive sci-tech innovation platform integrating innovative R&D, achievement transformation and talent training by improving scientific research facilities and industrial supporting services. In this regard, Zeng Zeyao, Vice Chairman of the Macao Economic Association, pointed out that the construction of the park will help form an agglomeration effect of sci-tech enterprises, startups, suppliers and service providers, break down barriers between industry, academia and research, promote the implementation and transformation of scientific research achievements, and create more high-quality employment opportunities for local young people.
Mr. Huang Shuzhan stated in the interview: Macao is relatively limited in land and space resources, and the development of its sci-tech industry is restricted by space and scale constraints. However, science and technology is the primary productive force, and the transformation and upgrading of all industries are inseparable from sci-tech support. Under the unique institutional advantages of "One Country, Two Systems", Macao is backed by the motherland and connected to the world. It should fully leverage its location and policy advantages, seize the critical window of opportunity driven by innovation, and promote the breakthrough development of the sci-tech industry.
He emphasized that the construction of the Science and Technology R&D Park is not only a hardware investment, but also the reconstruction of the innovation system and industrial ecology. It is necessary to fully coordinate resources and build social consensus during the planning stage to ensure efficient and reasonable investment. At the same time, Macao has a solid talent foundation. Many young people study science and technology-related majors in world-renowned universities, but struggle to display their talents locally due to the lack of industrial platforms. The completion of the park will provide broader employment and promotion opportunities for local talents, and attract mid-to-high-end sci-tech teams and innovative enterprises to settle in, forming a multi-level and complementary talent ecosystem.
As a representative of high-tech enterprises rooted in Macao and serving the world, Optical Link Century has always taken scientific and technological innovation as its core driving force, and is deeply engaged in digital transformation, cybersecurity and intelligent connectivity. Based on 219 self-built global POP points and an integrated cloud-network-security intelligent security architecture, the company provides high-performance, secure and compliant cross-border network services for more than 3,000 enterprises worldwide.
"In the future, Macao should not only have innovative technology, but also an industrial environment that supports innovation." Optical Link Century will continue to adopt an open and cooperative attitude, work with the government, universities and industrial partners to jointly promote the high-quality development of Macao’s sci-tech industry, and help build a new economic pattern driven by innovation and win-win intelligence.
